At Cannes they are showing a reissue of Pan’s Labyrinth so this right here is a Doug Jones is awesome post.
He was nervous about playing a romantic lead in The Shape of Water for the first time in his career and he had this to say:
I knew that going into my acting career. That I had to be either funny or scary. So I have had an entire career now 35 years of being funny and scary. And so when you’re given a monster character like the Amphibian Man from The Shape of Water, that’s… that has a little bit of frightening element to him. But then you tilt your head and go, “wait he’s kind of sexy”
Correct, Doug Jones. And if you read a million interviews with him or even just one you will see immediately that he is a supernerd and so thoughtful about acting and it’s incredible. He talked about a bunch of different roles with Rolling Stone, including both The Faun and the Pale Man — here’s a bit about the Pale Man:
I came in making him more gangly, more rubber limbed. He sort of galloped down the hallway. Guillermo changed my demeanor with him immediately after the first take. He said, “No, no, no. Give me more of a George Romero zombie.” That was all I had to hear. What you saw on film was because of that one note.
If you want a raw Doug experience, he’s on What We Do in the Shadows both in and out of makeup, but ALSO, he was a butler in a Hallmark movie with Raquel Welch. You can see him for .00025 seconds in this trailer around the 0:20 mark, –>holding flowers<–.
Finally, love this, here’s what he said about meeting Andy Serkis:
I met Andy Serkis a few years ago at Comic-Con. We’d been talked about to each other for 10 years, and we finally met and hugged for like five minutes and giggled and didn’t say a word and kept looking at each other, hugging and giggling more. We kind of agreed that we do the same job, we’re both actors. My makeup just happens to go on before the movie starts and his goes on after.
What a couple of delightful nerds.
